M. Bernice Newhouse
Bernice Newhouse, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 28, 2008 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa by Rev. Matthew Larson with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 27 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.
Mina “Bernice” (Meylink) Newhouse was born December 10, 1919, in Hull, Iowa, the daughter of Berend J. and Mina Bernice (Houwers) Meylink. She was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hull, IA. Bernice attended Hull Elementary School and Hull High School. She received a two year teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College and taught grades 1 and 2 in Urbana, IA from 1939-1941 and then kindergarten in Rock Valley, IA.
On May 26, 1941, Bernice was united in marriage with Maynard Arnold Newhouse in her home in Hull, IA. They started farming near Burr Oak in 1946 where Bernice was busy with her household and seven children. For the past 30 years, they spent winters in Brownsville, TX.
Bernice was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church and in the winters, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Brownsville, TX, and directed choirs at both churches. She was also a member of Joan of Arc, Farm Bureau Women’s Chorus, served on the Decorah Library Board, was active with the Burr Oak Lutheran Church Women, Silver Crest Golf and Country Club and RSVP. She was a teacher substitute in the North Winneshiek school system and her love of teaching led her to do volunteer work in the Brownsville school district.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maynard on September 1, 2000; and two brothers: Henry and William Meylink.
She is survived by her seven children: Nancy Beck of Madison, WI, Craig (Marilyn) Newhouse of Decorah, IA, Gail (Bruce) Henderson of Atlantic, IA, Faith (Dennis) Johnson of Ida Grove, IA, Jean (Arlen) Schrum of Indianola, IA, Keith (Jane) Newhouse of Rosemount, MN, Bruce Newhouse of Decorah, IA; 18 grandchildren: Susan (Mike) Bramwell, Betsy (Wade) Hanna, Ben (Becca) Newhouse, Julie (Josh) Felhofer, Barbara Newhouse (Katolo Mendamenda), Scott (Beth) Henderson, Todd Henderson (Julia Hartwig), Brad (Michelle) Henderson, Matt (Becky) Johnson, Melissa (Phillip) Jensen, Luke Johnson, Miranda Johnson, Katie, Christy and Beth Schrum, Justine and Nancy Newhouse, Maynard Newhouse; nine great grandchildren: Abby and Gavin Bramwell, Martin Hanna, Benson and Beau Newhouse, Haley and Torren Johnson, Evan and Anabel Jensen; one sister-in-law, Verna Simenson of Neenah, WI....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Maynard Newhouse, 88, of Burr Oak
Maynard Arnold Newhouse, 88, of Burr Oak, died Sept. 1, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after being an invalid about a year and a half as a result of multiple health problems.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1912, in Highland Township to Albert and Myrtle Casterton Newhouse. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1930, from Iowa State Teachers College in 1937 and graduate school of the University of Minnesota.
He was married to Bernice Meylink on May 26, 1941. Seven children were born to that union: Nancy Beck, Craig (Marilyn) Newhouse, Gail (Bruce) Henderson, Faith (Dennis) Johnson, Jean (Arlin) Schrum, Keith (Jane) Newhouse and Bruce (Barbara) Newhouse.
He served during WWII in the Mediterranean Theater with 337 Infantry Custer Division. He received a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Later, he served with the T5 Division Headquarters in information and education matters.
During his life he served as a principal, instructor and coach in Burr Oak; Urbana, Iowa, and Canton. From 1946 until 1995, he farmed. He was a member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the VFW, the Silver Crest Country Club, the REC Board, the Tri-County School Board and the Brownsville, Texas Country Club. He was a board president of NE Farm Service. In 1969 he was named an Iowa Master Farmer.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Stella Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Bernice, seven children, 22 grandchildren and one sister, Verna Simenson.
The funeral was held Monday at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery. Fjelstul Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Anabel (Lindberg) Johnson, 83, of Ida Grove died peacefully Jan. 18, 2012, at her home in rural Ida Grove.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa, with Jay Yousling, son-in-law, will officiate.. Burial will be in Kiron Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. led by Phillip Jensen, husband of Anabel's granddaughter, at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Anabel Lindberg was born Sept. 21, 1928, to Everett and Ruth (Hedstrom) Lindberg, in rural Sac County, Iowa. She graduated from Odebolt (Iowa) High School in 1945, then received her teaching certificate and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. Anabel taught school in Schaller, Iowa, and rural Ida County, where she met her husband-to-be, Howard Johnson.
Anabel and Howard were married on Sept. 25, 1948, celebrating 63 years of marriage last fall.
Anabel's family and faith are hallmarks of her life. At the age of 12, on Dec. 1, 1940, she trusted Christ as her Savior. She was baptized at First Baptist Church on Dec. 14, 1941, and was active in the church throughout her life, including Sunday school teacher, deaconess, women's groups and numerous committees.
Her passion was being a mother (and grandmother and great-grandmother), known for her caring and sweet spirit, and selfless love for her family. She supported and took an interest in her children's and grandchildren's activities, serving in many volunteer roles including 4-H leader. She was a faithful supporter of her husband in his farming and purebred Angus cattle business. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family, gardening together with Howard, and sewing, especially for her children and herself.
Anabel is survived by her husband, Howard; their four children and spouses, Dennis (Faith) Johnson of Ida Grove, Linda (Dean) Whaley of Manson, Iowa, Diane (Jay) Yousling of Aurora, Colo., and J. Gary (Kim) Johnson of Blair, Neb.; 11 grandchildren, Matthew (Becky) Johnson of St. Joseph, Mo., Melissa (Phillip) Jensen of Ida Grove, Luke Johnson and fiancee, Karen Goldsmith of Burlington, Iowa, Miranda Johnson of Ida Grove, Michael (Karen) Whaley of Olathe, Kan., John Whaley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joseph and John Yousling of Aurora, Colo., J. Graham Johnson of Houston, Texas, Eric Johnson of Evanston, Ill., and Karl Johnson of Blair, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren, Haley, Torren, Kane, Evan, Anabel, Brooks, Caleb, and Ashlyn; and a brother, Warren Lindberg of Ida Grove.

Howard William Johnson, age 85, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died peacefully at his home in rural Ida Grove, Iowa, on September 20, 2012.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2012, at Kiron Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Pastor Jay Yousling will officiate, with burial to follow in the Kiron Cemetery. Howard W. Johnson was born September 28, 1926, to John and Ione (Johnson) Johnson in Ida County, Iowa. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1943. After high school graduation, he joined his father and uncle in the Johnson Bros. Purebred Angus business and farming. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anabel (Lindberg) Johnson in January 2012; his parents; a brother, J. Gordon; and a sister, Mildred Deppe.
Howard and Anabel were married on September 25, 1948. The loss of his beloved wife of 63 years, Anabel, earlier this year, left him heartbroken. Howard is survived by four children and their spouses, Dennis (Faith) Johnson of Ida Grove, Linda (Dean) Whaley of Manson, Diane (Jay) Yousling of Aurora, CO, and J. Gary (Kim) Johnson of Blair, NE; 11 grandchildren, Matthew (Becky) Johnson of St. Joseph, MO, Melissa (Phillip) Jensen of Ida Grove, Luke (Karen) Johnson of Burlington, Miranda Johnson of Denver, CO, Michael (Karen) Whaley of Olathe, KS, John Whaley of Cedar Rapids, Joseph and John Yousling of Aurora, CO, J. Graham of Cambridge, MA, Eric Johnson of Evanston, IL, and Karl Johnson of Fort Worth, TX; eight great-grandchildren, Haley, Torren, Kane, Evan, Anabel, Brooks, Caleb, and Ashlyn.
Howard's love for Anabel, laying the Christian spiritual foundation for his family and inspiring a strong work ethic are the hallmarks of his life. At the age of 30, he trusted Christ as his Savior. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Kiron and was active in the church throughout his life, including serving as deacon, trustee, usher, and several other appointments.
His passions were loving, providing for, and supporting his family. He was known for his reputation in the Purebred Angus cattle business. He was also an active supporter of his grandchildren's extracurricular activities and academic achievements as this was very important to him.He served as a 4-H leader, on local USDA committees, Hayes township trustee and was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.
