Golfed today

Nine from the family golfed today.  Bruce N, Gail, Jean, Jane,     Bruce H Keith, Nancy, Faith     Denny golfed with 3 others from 4 Seasons.  They ordered pizza for after playing.
In the am there was a $5 breakfast.  Scrambled eggs, 2 types of sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, blueberry and plain pancakes.  Amazing!!!  Also coffee, salsa and grits for those with southern tastes.  Then back to the trailer.  Denny and Keith worked on getting bikes working.  I played pickle ball for a while before going to play golf.  On the way home we stopped at Wal-mart and got some plugins, a bike tire, lightbulbs.  The guys beat the girls in Mandy's game. Denny said the guys beat the twisted sisters.  Afterwards all the others left Denny and Bruce visited and visited and visited.  When Bruce asked Denny if his foursome used any of his shots,  "Actually, I saved their "behinds" several of times."  Now that brought a lot of laughter.

An email came out from Arthur church saying
Normal Sunday morning services are planned on, December 31.  Please make a wise decision about attending, however, due to the extremely cold temperatures in the forecast.

In the Valley

Nice leisurely am.   Denny fixed coffee.  At 10 Nancy and Jean had choir practice, Jane and I walked on the beach.  I was so happy.  Instead of driving north to a public beach access, I parked the car and we walked thru a hotel outside sidewalk and got to the beach.  We walked a couple of miles before going to pick up Nancy and Jean.  We stopped at HEB, then I fixed stir fried veggies for lunch.  We played pickle ball with 2 Bruces and Gail.  Denny's table and chairs were delivered.  Bruce helped put them together.  We went to Joe's Oyster Bar.  It was so great.
Ordered Lisianthus flowers from Gro n Sell

On a very sad note ... a man in the park died tonight.  Unexpected.  59 years old. Just retired 2 weeks ago.  He was from Ontario and his daughter and other family members were visiting.

Brownsville Arrived

We left San Marcos about 8:50.  It's a 5 hour drive to BV.  It seemed to go so slow.  We stopped at HEB for groceries before heading to 4 Seasons.  We walked and looked at went up and down nearly every aisle.  No one was at the trailer when we got there, so we unpacked.  Lots to haul in.  Joan came over for a quick visit before the sisters came home.   The mattress came and so everyone went in the bedroom to watch it inflate.  Denny, Bruce, and I walked to CandC wings.  It was fun to have all nine of us there for supper.  Back home we played Joker.  Nice afternoon in the valley.  Much better when Denny is here this year.  Thank you, Jesus.
Rose is a pretty cute little girl.  It was fun to watch her open/play with boxes instead of gifts.

Set up new mattress

Heading to Texas

We got up around 5:30 and on the road about 6:30 am.  Nice traveling weather.  It was 9 below zero when we left.  Here's to  ... hoping the weather warms up as we travel south.
It is 1:30 pm and we just filled up around Wichita, Kansas.
We entered Texas at 5:50 pm.   Denny has driven all the way.  11 1/2 hours.  10-11 hours left.   615 miles left.  Denny is such a trooper driving thru Ft. Worth area.  May the caffeine be with you.
Note to self ... When the google map shows a red line on the road you are going to take ... it just may be that the traffic is slow to stopped.  Uffta!!!  but do-able.  6:54 pm ... just imagine rush hour. Uffta!! Not me ...Not fun.  7:20 and we breath easier and have a Tieffentaler meat stick.   Reward for making it.  Only one real wrong turn, but the blue road on the google map brought us back.
We stopped at San Marco about 10:45 pm and stayed at a Motel 6.  Questionable.  I was really worried when I looked out in the morning and did not see the Prius where we had parked it.  UFFTA!!  But Denny had moved it when he went out to get our pillows.  Thank you, Jesus.  (The bed in the room did not have pillows.  Questionable. )
Leaving home in Iowa 6:30 am:  1280 miles left

Arriving in Texas 5:50 pm:        615 miles left

This morning the Cooks sent a picture of Jack.  So cute.  I guess the plan is to put him in his Comfy Coop vehicle in the morning after he is fed and drive him from room to room as they get ready to go to work.  A Guy And His Wheels ...

Phillip's grandpa Phillip died on December 21,  The funeral was Dec. 26.

This was Phillip's tribute:

“The Farm,” Grandpa Phil’s Funeral (December 27, 2017) Faith Community Church Palmer, Iowa I’ve been thinking of this question, “What is The Farm?” Well, first and obviously, it is a farm in the way that many farms exist across Iowa and the Midwest. It is a farm - and perhaps a fairly typical farm in form and function and appearance. But, what has made, the Phil Brinkman farm in section 19 of Garfield Township in Pocahontas County, Iowa not just a farm but, The Farm?

The Farm, to so many, including my Grandpa Phil and Grandma Bette’s many grandchildren. Including me. Was it the fun of hooting and hollering along with Grandpa during an Iowa State basketball game? Of big bowls of popcorn and Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights? Was it the thrill of Grandpa’s childlike and mischievous not-so-subtle hints towards the possibility of dessert near the end of a meal? Was it, those deeper memories now, of being put to work by Grandpa? Bedding calf huts, baling hay, picking up walnuts, moving sheep, or whatever else he could think of? Was it the fact that, after any job, he paid for it immediately - never allowing a day to pass before settling his account? Even with his grandchildren? Was it the way that Grandpa guarded and defended Grandma’s dignity? By insisting that when a meal is declared ready you drop your work or play immediately and head to the table; by presiding over the table with a subtle bearing and dignity of his own and asking someone to say “Grace;” by being the chief washer-of-dishes for many years now; by unfailingly praying in his own mealtime prayers that the Lord would, “bless the hands of those who have prepared it.”? Words invariably meant to bless his wife. Was it the kindness of their kitchen - together one - in their heart open to receiving in love all who gathered there? Grandpa and Grandma were different from each other - but kind of like different sides to the same coin, or better, the cardinal and gold of their beloved Cyclones. You were received into their home as they together made room in the most pure and simple - unpretentious love. There is more. Much more. This is just my own start. But, it’s beginning to become clear to me that there is no exhaustive answer to the question, “What is the Farm?” I’m inclined to think all the more that - that question - may take a lifetime (and perhaps much more) to answer.

See, my Grandpa Phil and Grandma Bette have cultivated a place - The Farm - that in all its Goodness, Truth, and Beauty does nothing less than stand as an outpost along the way to the Kingdom of Heaven. Of course, they had no such grandiose intentions - and have never thought of their place in these terms. But, their self-forgetfulness and humility is also no small part of why it’s true. And, as we who have been so fortunate as to find refuge on The Farm know so well, we have had hearts formed towards The Good, the True, and The Beautiful there. That we would long for unbroken marriages of a determined and quiet fidelity. That we would pursue education and an endlessly curious and attentive mind. That we would desire satisfying and meaningful work - done well and with integrity. That we would imagine homes of safety and refuge for others in our own homes. Grandpa Phil and Grandma Bette together have nurtured and cultivated a place where we have come to desire these things - not just in our minds. But in our hearts. We have found refuge and a deep formation towards the Good, True, and Beautiful in this place that they have made together.

And it would be easy to end here...and so many stories do. But we have to go a step further in the story of my grandparents to tell it rightly. To stop here would be to stop short of telling the truth. The truth is that the profound refuge and deep formation that we experienced at The Farm was because Jesus was always a guest there as well. Without Jesus, The Farm, would simply be a farm. And so, with the writer of Hebrews, Grandpa and Grandma have known this to be true:

...having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But, as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

It’s not The Farm. It’s what The Farm points to. In The Farm Grandpa Phil and Grandma Bette have been pointing us towards that homeland. And for that so many of us will be forever - no, eternally - grateful.

The Brinkman family had a tradition of extending down the road and waving as family/friends leave the farm.  When the funeral procession went past the farm before going to the cemetery, the cousins all got out of their cars and waved goodbye to G'pa.  He is missed...

everyone left ... except us

I guess Kane woke up around 5 am and threw up.  Nice start to the day for Becky.  We had cereal and left over gravy for breakfast.  I got out all of the refrigerator contents and the family picked out food they would like to take with them.  Luke took onions and sausage, Matt ate the hamballs at 10:30,  Mandy took the chili,  Missy's kids would eat peanut soup.  We started doing bedding.  Denny used the sanitize with oxiclean setting on the new washer.  Get rid of those bugs!!!  Jack was up around 6:30.  I sent Mandy back to bed.  She was so happy when she got up and I told her that Jack had a blow out when she was gone.  Oh, yes!!! It was major.  I did not have any diapers, but I washed him and put a big towel around him.  I thought the fresh air might help his diaper rash. Before they left Missy took a picture of the 4 in 2016- now 6 in 2017 picture set re-creation.  I think it would be great if it was a yearly photo shoot.    Denny went in to IG with Matt to get his signature on the lock  box.  Matt left the basketball hoop for Dad to deliver/ assemble at a later date, otherwise the kids got all the big stuff put into their vehicles.  The visitation for G'pa Phillip was 4-7 pm.  After they got to Pocahontas, Evan was not feeling the best so Missy was with him at the visitation and she brought the 7 Jensen cousins home a little early and put them to bed.  Shannon and Andrew stayed in our bnb.  Our house looks very clean, so I guess it is time to head south.  :)

Merry Christmas

Monday December 25!!
Merry Christmas! Jesus is born.
Too bad, poor Brooks woke up about 5 am throwing up.  Denny called his folks and Phillip came and got him.  Brooks stayed at his house all day.  He felt the worst about not being able to see Kane open the gifts that he got for Kane, so Missy set up a face time for some of the present opening.
During the morning Matt also did not feel well and he participated at a distance.  The rest of us ate cinnamon rolls and opened gifts.  Denny made a brunch and we ate about 2pm out in the garage.  Denny took the kids to the sledding hill again AND later in the afternoon he got the 4 wheeler running.  That was a big thing!!!  At night we had chili and peanut soup.  Mandy made salad and Missy brought hummas.  Becky had veggies.  At night Mandy had a cookie decorating contest with a Dubuque gift from Beth.  She put it on facebook to have the general public vote for the ugliest sweater.  Missy won!!!    We played a real fun game in the living room.  Mandy set it up.  Too bad Matt was not feeling the best and so he was down in the basement.  Brooks was resting in our bedroom for the night, that way his parents could be here and not quarantined to their home.

Some of my favorite pictures/memories from Christmas time together:

Denny reading the Bible before we opened presents.  Kane was on my lap and then moved to right beside G'pa.
The family sitting and watching and enjoying each other and drinking coffee.

Missy facetiming with sick Brooks when Kane opened his gift from Brooks.  Brooks said that was what he was really sad that he was going to miss seeing Kane open the gift.  Look how happy Kane is.  Look how happy the moms were.

Uncle Luke telling Evan about the leggo choice of ammunition extra pieces that he bought for Evan.  Luke told about the ammunition/ etc.  that he had worked on and that he gave to Evan.
See Jason's turquoise socks.

Haley and the two blankets she made for her two new cousins:  SO nice!!!!

Spending time sledding,  The kids really enjoyed it.  Torren found a dorm size refrigerator and put it on a sled to bring home.  Karen and Luke came out with Rose for a "photo shoot".  It was cold and they were not out very long.

This is Sunday December 24:

I am not sure how to add a post for that day.  Somehow I forgot to post for that day.  Uffta!!!
We had biscuits and gravy for breakfast.  G'pa and I took the boy grands for donuts.  The girls stayed and played with the babies.  After church we took pictures.  For lunch we had ham balls, party potatoes, farm corn and salad.  Missy took the kids to her house to play for a while.  Some adult and infants took naps and later Denny and Matt took the kids sledding.  The Minn Johnsons came to the hill for a photo shoot.  Cooks just stayed in where it was warm.
We went to the candle light Christmas Eve service and afterwards had soup in the coop.  Zuppa in the coopa.  The Grands went to bed we had peppermint brownie.  We talked with the kids about the will we signed and gave them a nest egg $ for a visit to Brownsville.

Let the Celebration begin ... Jesus is born Praise His name!!!

We got lots of cleaning completed and kids are not coming until 4 ... so Denny just keeps working.  The cabinets in the kitchen have been "restored", now trash is going out.  I think I took a short nap.  All the kids got here about 4:30.  We went to the church youth building about 5.  It worked so well.  There was lots to do: ping pong, pool, 4 square, volleyball, dodge ball. carpet ball, plus little ones just lay on the carpet and have big ones google over them.  Denny left early and started to grill brats. We had his onion rings, corn mac and cheese,  and potato skins.   We ate in the garage "dining room".  It worked well.  At night we just sat around and visited in the LR.  The grands played Speak out and laughed a lot.  Jensens took their kids home with them to sleep in their own beds.

Family gets together tomorrow!!!

I went over to Jensen's about 7 am so Missy could take the boys to school and I could be with Anabel. At home I ordered alstromeria flowers.  Uffta!!! It costs lots for shipping and handling.  Phillip bought me potatoes when he was in Denison and I made potato soup for Christmas Eve.  I got a haircut at 11:30.  At 3 I went to Missy's to be with Anabel.  We watched a gymnastics movie and I peeled potatoes and started them boiling.  I got out the mixer and made frosting then washed the bowl and beaters and started making party potatoes for Missy.  At 4:30 Denny and I met with Pete to update out will plus some other papers.  Susan came out to the farm; it was so nice to visit.  We were getting ready for bed and 3 guys from CCF came to pick up a package that had been delivered to the CCF mailbox.  Nice day.

This morning when I was at Missy's I used Phillip's computer and this was written by one of Phillip's missionary friends in Haiti as the missionary talked about December:
"It's the month I acutely feel how far away we are. Far from friends, family, snow, lights, carols and familiar Christmas services.
It's also the month where amazing and beautiful things happen.  It's the month most of HOPE's support comes in, allowing us to minister another year to this community we love.
It's the month we are reminded that our hearts are in 2 places because we love and feel loved by so many.
It's the month the longing is loudest- For family and friends and familiar but mostly for Jesus. That's good and beautiful, I guess. Hard but good.
So we sit in the tension. The already and the not yet. Pretty sure life is in the groaning...
We don't live in despair for He has come."
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

clean

Jensens got the sad news that Gpa Phil has died today.  Pray for the family as they navigate this loss.  What a sweet peach of a man.  He will be greatly missed.  Jensens went to visit them last Saturday.  I stopped to visit Bette and Phil when Denny was on RAGBRAI.  Phillip was named for him and this is a sad day, but also a day of rejoicing because G'pa Phil is with the Lord.
The airbnbers left and we cleaned all day.  The basement and Cherry Creek look amazing.  I was just heading to the food pantry and Missy called.  Anabel was sick and so I went to Odebolt and got Anabel and brought her home in her own bed.  I made 1 batch of dill onion bread and 2 pans of cinnamon rolls.

Matt and Becky

15 years!!! Congratulations!!!  We are so thankful God put you together.

Early out and I took the kids to get their haircut.  Then Evan went to visit at Larsons and A&B came home with me.  We made cookies.  Awana store night went well.  Lots of goodies for lots of clubbers.  At night Denny gave me a massage with lotion for sleeping.  And I did sleep well.  It was an unexpected treat.
New Roof is on!!!!

Cherokee lunch

I baked the onion dill buns that I mixed up last night.  And use the container of sour Kraut to make rueben balls.  Boy, it has been a long time since I have made them.  I took Anabel's doll house and figures into the Grain Train and Sallie M. came and bought them.  It was Sharon's birthday, so we had cake.  I stopped at the bank and decided not to get cash, instead write checks for tax purposes.  At 11 4 of us met to carpool to Cherokee.  Teresa, Ginny, Sharon and myself.  It was fun to have soup at Mandy's and dessert at Molly's.  Jack was wonderful and it was fun to visit and see their homes.  I got home about 4 and took a quick nap.  The roofers were just finishing up.   I went to Jensens about 5 and we went to gymnastics Christmas program.  Super fun Day!!!!
